Team Underdogs proved that the name may not be fitting after a weekend where they seemed to be meant to make it to the finals. After losing to KC sports in the chair round, the Underdogs were determined to get a 2nd chance to play KC Sports again. The Underdogs were matched up against team Young Guns, a Northern Michigan team that consisted of almost all young men ranging in ages of 15 - 24 and the team captain who was in his 40s. The Young guns seemed to have the momentum to make it to the finals and match up against KC Sports when the tables turned and the Underdogs made a comeback to end the match and get a 2nd chance at KC Sports.
The Underdogs would need to defeat KC Sports twice in this true double elimination format and dod just that. It was a terrific pool weekend in spite of a few issues with the hotel.
The teams above were comprised on the following players:
Underdogs - Scott Dowd, Josh Francis, Matt Partain, Lupe Garcia, Joe Torres
KC Sports - Kip Curtis, Howard Lemaster, Fred D, Rene havel, Art King, Spencer Overman
Young Guns - John LaLonde, Tyler Thornton, Mike Woloszyk, Jason Woloszyk, Nathan Burpee
Coz 2 - Matt Stieg, Doug Martin, Barndon Nelson, Mike Toten, Craig Priest
Odd Ducks - Dan Kelsey Jr., Wayne Taylor, Brian Morgan, Jim Aldrich, John Sayad, Don Bergeson
Levi's Losers - Levi Alberts, Don Lawler, Charlie Bell, Larry Revard, Steve Webster
Congrats to all of our teams that cashed and thank you to all of the teams that participated! We look forward to the next one and hope to fill it with 32 teams!!

We had a great weekend considering we only had a little over 3 weeks to advertise the event due to last minute dates opening at the hotel and contract negotiations being finalized.
The hotel learned a few things from the players this weekend. It was the hotels first time dealing with pool players so, they definately learned that high price beer equals very little sales and no food equals grumpy players! they took notes and are willing to make changes to accomodate all of the players if we hold another event there!
We are currently discussing dates in january so, if we can agree on terms and beer prices, we may be back in January and with this much notice to advertise, we should have a field of at least 250 players between the divisions so stay tuned for details!
Firday night we kicked off the weekend with a mini event, originally single elimination, but, with a smaller filed we were able to extend it to a double elimination format.
The Open, A and BB divisions were combined to allow for better payouts and the Open players offered the others a 1 or 2 game spot depending on if they were A or BB. The A players offered a 1 game spot to the BBs.

It was another good turnout for the Michigan Players Tour. While the professional pool players we sometimes see were busy in North Carolina, we had our share of local talent come ouut to play this event. We had a number of new faces which means the word is spreading and the tour is growing. This was only our 4th big event and 5th event total so the turn outs are getting better and drawing new faces each time.
The Mini event took place Friday evening and finished up Saturday morning before the main event began. There was a field of 45.

There was a time when not many would challenge Juan on a bar table including road players that stopped through town. Juan hasnt been as active in serious pool in recent years but has decided to try to attend some of the tour events. The MPT had a number of requests to hold another event when players found out I was taking the month of October off. Because of the number of requests, we threw together a Mini Event with a $30 entry fee.
While we only received 20 entries, it was still a fun event and proved to be a tough field for many.
Tourney Payouts were Player Auction Payouts were
1st $210 1st $220
2nd $110 2nd $120
3rd $ 70 3rd $ 80
4th $ 50 4th $ 60
5th/6th $ 30
The first place position ended up going to Jason Kirkwood. Kirkwood won the event undefeated and showed why so many, even some of the best dare not take him on while his game is in gear on a bar box! Kirkwood had a monster break all day long and could do very little wrong! His break was so strong that our live feed had people asking what that sound was in the background, it was Kirkwoods break 2 tables down from the tv table!
When interviewing Kirkwood after the event, he stated he wasnt happy with his break all day.................imagine had he been happy with it, how much more difficult he would be to beat?!
Jason Kirkwood made his way through a field of 20 with wins over.......
Jason Kirkwood defeats Bye
Jason Kirkwood defeats Tim Rogers 7-4
Jason Kirkwood defeats Matt Broton 7-0, Matt had only a couple of opportunites to approach the table in this set. Kirkwood was focussed and on a mission to win this event after not placing as high as he thought he should in past MPT events.
Jason Kirkwood defeats Jason Timm 7-0, Jason Timm is a local Holland, MI player that is a C- level player. Timm entered the tournament feeling he would go 2 and out but the experience would be good for his game. He got the opportunity to play some tough players and was very happy to have had the chance to go against Kirkwood.
Jason Kirkwood defeats Pye 7-3, this was for the chair and now Kirkwood had to wait to see who was going to emerge from the one loss side. With results now known, Kirkwood would now have to be defeated twice by someone that he goes back and forth with on wins and losses on a bar table.
Jason Kirkwood defeated Richie Richeson in the first set 7-3
Our 2nd place finisher was Richie Richeson. Richeson played at different levels throughout the day seeming to have his focus come and go at times. Richesons day of play was as follows:
Richie Richeson defeats Bye
Richie Richeson defeats Joe C 7-1
Richie Richeson defeated by Houston Rodriguez 7-4
Richie Richeson defeats Bob Hendrix 7-3
Richie Richeson defeats Anthonoy Sok - 7-5
Richie Richeson defeeats Neil Dryfhout 7-0
Richie Richeson defeats Jason Timm 7-1
Richie Richeson defeats Houston Rodriguez 7-2
Richie Richeson defeats Pye 7-1, this win allows Richeson to take on Kirkwood. This had the makings of a grudge match.....these two have run into each other in the finals one other time on the MPT and it resulted in Kirkwood winning the event. Richeson did not want to take 2nd to Kirkwood again after making his way through the one loss side.
The final set would require that Richeson defeat Kirkwood twice in our true double elimination format.
The day ended after the first set and Kirkwood was the victor!
Richie Richeson defeated by Jason Kirkwood 7-3
3rd place finisher was Pye, a local Holland, MI player. Pye made his way through the following field:
Pye defeats Bye
Pye defeats Bob Hendrix 7-6
Pye defeats Charles WIlson 7-4
Pye defeats Houston Rodriguez 7-6
Pye defeated by Jason Kirkwood 7-3
Pye defeated by Richie Richeson 7-1
4th place finisher was Houston Rodrigeuz. Rodriguez made his way through the following field:
Houston Rodrigeuz defeats Neil Dryfhout 7-5
Houston Rodriguez defeats Salas 7-2
Houston Rodriguez defeated bye Richie Richeson 7-4
Houston Rodriguez defeats Shawn Buckholz 7-4
Houston Rodriguez defeated by Richie Richeson 7-2
5th/6th place finishers were, Shawn Buckholz and Jason Timm. Their day looked like this:
Shawn Buckhholz defeated by Anthony Sok 7-3
Shawn Buckholz defeats Bye
Shawn Buckholz defeats John Brummel 7-5
Shawn Buckholz defeats Bob Hendrix 7-1
Shawn Buckholz defeats Brandon Knowling 7-1
Shawn Buckholz defeats Tom D 7-4
Shawn Buckholz defeated by Houston Rodriguez 7-4
Congrats to Shawn for making his way to the money round after a tough loss in his first round match! GREAT COMEBACK SHAWN!
5th/6th
Jason Timm defeats Bye
Jason Timm defeats Izzac Zube 7-4
Jason Timm defeats Brandon Knowling 7-4
Jason Timm defeated by Jason Kirkwood 7-0
Jason Timm defeated by Richie Richeson 7-1 (this match was live streaming so be sure to check out the video!
The local C player, Jason Timm, played two of the best players in the area and told me after the tournament that it was great experience and was worth the entry. He also said he couldnt believe he made the money round so that was an added bonus for him. Nice work Jason Timm!!!!!

1st place Richie Richeson was the mini event winner. He came from the one loss side after being defeated by Tony Chohan 7-5. Wins for Richeson after that included, Juan Garcia 7-2, Arlo Walsman 7-4, Adam Smith 7-4, Neil Dryfhout 7-2, Tony Chohan 7-4 then Richeson went on to defeat Mark Ozman twice in the finals to take the event title. This was no easy event to win even with a field of 40, the majority of the players were very tough competetors.
2nd place Mark Ozman was our second place finisher! Ozman is a local player and showed a level of play throughout Friday evening that many of the locals have never seen from him before. Ozman had defeats over: bye, Mike Masters 7-3, John Skofic 7-1, Jason Kirkwood 7-4, Adam Smith 7-5 then Tony Chohan 7-1 WOW this moved Ozman into the chair undefeated!! The final match of the mini was played out Saturday at Noon and a different Ozman showed up to this final match and found it very difficult to keep up the pace with Richeson in either set losing the first set 7-3 and the final set 7-1. Congrats to Mark Ozman for a terrifc event and some great play!
3rd place Tony Chohan came into the event as one of the favorites to win both the mini and the main. Chohan settled for 3rd place in the mini after Mark Ozman, a local player found a gear that would knock Chohan into the one loss side and kept him in his seat for most of the set. Chohan had little chance to take out the on fire Ozman! Richeson struck the final blow defeating Chohan 7-4 and Chohan had to settle for 3rd place in this event! Chohans record througout the event was: defeating bye, Chris Lawsen 7-6, Russ Andrews 7-5, Richie Richeson 7-5, Neil Dryfhout 7-4 then was defeated by Mark Ozman 7-1 and defeated by Richie Richeson 7-4.
4th place Neil Dryfhout
5th 6th places Jason Kirkwood and Adam Smith
7th 8th Russ Andrews and Arlo Walsman
The main event was a $75 entry with $1500 added, race to 9 on the winners and 1 loss side. Amateur women race to 7. We had a field of 26
Chris Lawson
Kim Byrd
Shawn Buckholtz
Ronnie Wiseman
Mark Jarvis
Kenny Brisbon
Tony Chohan
Richie Richeson
Mark Ozman
Jason Kirkwood
Juan Garcia
Charles Wilson
Bob Hendrix (jr)
Dave Shaffer
Jeremey Seaman
Arlo Walsman
Adam Smith
Houston Rodriguez
Anthony Sok
Ryan Ward
Jason Holland
Chad Reno
Doug Young
Tony Morrison
Brandon Knowling
Connie Abercrombie
We had some great talent show up for this event!!
We had a field of 26 players and paid out through 5-6 places.
The main event winner was Arlo Walsman! Arlo showed some great play and heart coming throught his field. Arlo came from the 1 loss side to defeat Tony Chohan twice to take the championship!! It was a great match up and Arlo not only played very well but also showed that when a player is hot, there is little you can do to combat it! Chohan sat in his chair waiting for the rolls to change and going into the 2nd set, he was still waiting. The rolls continued to go in Walsmans favor and he also continued his almost flawless level of play. Chohan had little chance to get to the table with a shot in either set!
Arlos weekend went like this with defeats over: Dave Schaefer 9-4, Mark Jarvis 9-6, Richie Richeson 9-4. Arlo then ran into Tony Chohan who was on fire and was defeated by Chohan 9-7. Arlo went on in the 1 loss side with defeats over Ronnie Wiseman 9-8. The match against Wiseman looked like it was over when Wiseman had Arlo down 8-3 with Wiseman shooting the 6 ball straight in.............it seemed the match was over and Arlos run was finished until Wiseman saw his slow roll of the 6 ball roll out and sit in the pocket. This left Wiseman sitting in his seat for the next 5 racks. Arlo came back to knock Wiseman out of the event. Arlo went on after that match to defeat Adam Smith 9-8, Doug Young 9-5 then defeating Chohan 2 sets, 9-4, 9-4. Great play by Arlo Walsman!
2nd place Tony Chohan had wins over, Juan Garcia 9-0, Brandon Knowling 9-2, Bob Hendrix 9-6 Arlo Walsman 9-7, Doug Young 9-7. Chohan then fell to Walsman 9-4 in the 1st set and 9-4 the 2nd set.
3rd place Doug Young came through the following field: Kenny Brisbon 9-2, Shawn Buckholtz 9-7, Ronnie Wiseman 9-5, Adam Smith 9-7 then took his 1st loss being defeated by Chohan 9-7 and defeated by Walsman 9-5.
4th place Adam Smith went through the following field of players, defeating Houston Rodriguez 9-3, Charles Wilson 9-2, Jeremy Seaman 9-7 then falling to Doug Young 9-7 Adam Smith then defeated Jason Kirkwood 9-6 and then falling to Arlo Walsman 9-8 giving Smith a 4th place finish.
5th 6th place Ronnie Wiseman and Jason Kirkwood
We were live streaming a main table at this event and on Saturday from 1pm - 10pm had over 1000 viewers stop by online to watch. For anyone interested in watching the videos, they can view them online at www.ustream.com by searching for MPT or by checking out our website later this week at www.freewebs.com/miplayerstour/

Sorry for such a late update everyone! I have been having massive website and computer problems BUT they are corrected now thank goodness.
The next tournament is only a couple of weeks away, lets hope we are getting the word out to more people so we have a bigger showing in the main event. Players really need to show their support in order for the main event to continue in its current form.
The mini event on Friday night was again a terrific showing. We had 32 players come out to compete in this event. The following people played:
Lupe Gonzales
Houston Rodriguez
Anthony Sok
Jason Kirkwood
Richie Richeson
Lew Carlson
Neil Dryfhout
Mike Christensen
Izaac Zube
John Saechao
Ben Waite
Salas Padron
Bart Goode
Mac Hernandez
Charles Wilson
Pat Brown
Mark Ozman
Eric Brown
Tom Decker
Juan Garcia
John Brummel
Dirk Vanderploeg
Jeremy Perkins
Rick Poore
Rick Poore Jr.
Doug Evans
Shaun Buckholtz
John Skofic
Shane Roebuck
Pye Veo
Ben Daniels
Ojito
Again we had some local APA and BCA players attend this event and played very well against some tough and seasoned players!
The finishes for this Friday night MINI event is as follows:
Finish Tourney Payout Player Auction Player
1st place $350 $520 Jason Kirkwood
Jason had to beat Bart Goode twice to take the tournament and did just that with some great play! Jason lost an earlier match to 6-7 against Tom Decker to move him into the 1 loss side.
2nd place $170 $260 Bart Goode
Bart Goode ran into a determined Jason Kirkwood after losing on the hill to Decker earlier in the evening. Bart needed to win 1 set to take the tournament but fell to Kirkwood the first set 7-4 then again the 2nd set 7-3. Goode played some great matches throughout the evening to win the chair but Kirkwood had other plans for how the mini tournament would end.
3rd place $80 $125 Tom Decker
Tom Decker almost didnt play in the tournament because he said he hasnt been playing enough to compete. A friend convinced him to play! He had some great matches including the match against Kirkwood where Tom showed talent and determination by taking the set 7-6 over Kirkwood!
4th place $60 $75 Richie Richeson
Richeson came through from the 1 loss side after losing his 2nd round match up to Juan Garcia 7-6! Both players showed amazing talent but in the end, the slow methodical approach of Garcia proved to throw Richeson off his game by just enough to allow Garcia to take the match. Richeson made a long and hard comeback to make the final 4!
5th-6th place $40 $50 Houston Rodriguez
$40 $50 Shane Roebuck
7th-8th place $30 $0 Neil Dryfhout
$30 $0 Mark Ozman
The main tournament turn out was fairly disappointing but, for our 2nd event, I'll chalk it up to people being unsure how the tournaments are run and if we actually pay what we say we will and for this weekend, another tournament ended up being posted after this one was set. The tournament was held at a very popular place for pool players and many chose to attend that event! Lets hope conflicts such as this dont happen often.
We had the following 11 players attend and compete for the $1500 added prize fund! Yes folks, we still added the $1500 even with 11 entries!!
The field consisted of:
Jason Kirkwood
Richie Richeson
Houston Rodriguez
Bart Goode
Charles Wilson
Shawn Buckholtz
Eric Brown
Shane Roebuck
Juan Garcia
Mark Ozman
Jeff Richards
The finishes for this MAIN event are as follows:
Finish Tourney Payout Player Auction Player
1st place $1200 $325 Jason Kirkwood
Kirkwood went undefeated in this event to take home the title! Kirkwood played Richeson for the chair and defeated him 9-1! This match along with many others of Richeson, Kirkwood, Goode, Rodriguez and others are available to view! Make sure you check them out because we had some great match ups streaming live and now taped for your viewing pleasure!
2nd place $800 $175 Richie Richeson
One of the highlights of the night was a match up that was not taped was the matchup between Richeson and Buckholtz. This match was announced and as I was typing in scores to our online viewers of other matches being played, Richeson went WILD and won the set 9-0 in less than 15 minutes! Yes folks I said it.............less than 15 minutes! It was unbelievable and many of the people online were asking if the match was just called. It was something else and Buckholtz showed a great attitude and had a terrific sense of humor about the whole thing by just laughing as Richeson put on a show running around the table talking to himself!
3rd place $350 $65 Bart Goode
Goode showed that he is someone to watch out for and not to take lightly at the table. He made a great showing this weekend and really showed everyone that he can hang in with the top dogs!
4th place $140 $30 Shawn Buckholtz
Shawn played great all weekend but had the unfortunate timing of hitting Richeson in dead stroke then going on to play Bart Goode to advance. Goode made his presence known and Buckholtz could do very little to stop Goode's game and his advancing to the next round. Great effort by Buckholtz this weekend and some great shooting!
In addition to the mini on Friday and the main even Saturday and Sunday, we also offered a mini mini event for $10 entry! This allowed spectators to join in the fun! We also offered a beat the top player challenge where Jason Kirkwood or Richie Richeson could be challenged at a race to 2 9ball for $10. If the challenger won, they received an autographed got action tshirt saying that the top player got their ass kicked at the Michigan Players Tour! We took a picture of the 2 time winner of a t-shirt. Anthony Sok of Hollands host room, Chalkys Que Stick Cafe' played Kirkwood numerous times and did defeat him and win to autographed t-shirts from Kirkwood! The video of these challenge matches are also posted for viewing. One of the tshirts is proudly framed and hung above the main counter at Chalkys!!
All in all it was a great weekend with a lot of terrific play even with the short field in the main event. We were streaming live all weekend on one table where we played most feature matchups! During the Richeson vs Kirkwood matchups, we had over 100 people viewing live online!! What a great turnout! We plan on having a feature table streaming live at each event going forward as long as there are no technical difficulties. I want to thank everyone who viewed online, who participated and come to the website to check out our updates, pictures and videos.
Until the next one................Be well and shoot well!

Well our next tournament is being held in a few weeks at Chalkys in Holland, Michigan. Im working on getting sponsorship now for the events in September, October and December. The December event will hopefully be our big year end bash with 5k added.....................thats the hope anyway but worst case it will be the usual 1500 added.
The tour takes up a lot of my time you would be amazed at how many hours it takes to get this going and keep it going. I hope more players show up for the main event this time so the tour can continue. Without the players, sponsors will go away!! We need to players to make the same committment we are to making the tour work.
We have Richie Richeson and Jason Kirkwood all set to run challenge tables for the spectators..................there should be quite a few people trying their hand at beating them it should be fun! One of these days, I hope we get large enough to have to take pre registrations because waiting to see who will actually show up is brutal! So many players say theyre coming and then poof............they are no shows.
Its a lot of work so speaking of that....................I better get back to it and work on more sponsorship for you fellas!
Talk to you soon!

One loss Side playing at noon Sunday (Race to 9)
Beko (Wisconsin player) vs Richie Richeson from Muskegon
Final two on winners side playing for the chair:
Adam Smith from Detroit vs Shane Winters from New York
On a special note, Mike Massey also played in this event and finished 9-12th. He put on a great show and we appreciate him showing support for the tour! More to follow Sunday evening!
I also want to make special mention of a match between Jason Kirkwood and Bart Goode in the main event in the early matches on Saturday. Bart had to face Kirkwood again after being blanked for losing a flip when Kirkwood ran out the set to 7 on Goode in the Mini event.
Goode showed very strong play and heart when he put a 5 pack on Kirkwood ending Kirkwoods run for the chair with a score of 9-8 Goode! Nice play by both it was one of the crowd pleasers of the weekend!
Main tournament results are as follows:
1st Prize Money Side Pot
Richie Richeson $1300.00 $750.00
2nd
Shane Winters $ 800.00 $450.00
3rd
Adam Smith $470.00 $280.00
4th
Beko $350.00 $100.00
5th-6th
John Fields $100.00
Jason Kirkwood $100.00
Shane Winters played Adam Smith for the chair Saturday evening and took control of the match early on. Adam started making a come back only to be stopped by Shane and eventually lost the chair to Shane at a score of 9-5.
All Shane had to do now was wait for the winner of the one loss side. Those match ups were:
Richie Richeson vs Beko
Beko started strong showing great skill and had Richeson 4 -1 before Richeson got to the table and made a strong comeback eventually winning the set 9 to 4.
The next match was then set.
Adam Smith vs Richie Richeson
Richeson ran out from the break 5 times during this set and showed a power break allowing him to take the set. Smith shows the crowd how powerful his break is but in this set, he was plagued with pocketing balls on the break but not having a shot afterwards. This gave Richeson the edge he needed to win the set.
Richeson took the match from Smith at a score of 9-4.
Richeson then moved on to match up with Shane Winters for the tournament title. Richeson was the one loss winner so in our true double elimination format, would have to beat Winters twice to take the title.
The first set started off with Richeson showing his talent by playing almost flawless pool only allowing Shane to the table a few times and normally with no shot.
With Richeson at the table and 5 balls left all in front of pockets, Winters concedes the match and flips for the next set.
Richeson wins the first set at a score of 9 to 2 in front of a 40 plus crowd! The crowd went wild with the display of almost perfect pool yet again by Richeson.
Set two is a bit of a different story with both players showing signs of frustration and fatigue after a long weekend, they play back and forth .
Game 2 - Richeson makes a great kick on the 1 ball pocketing it to leave himself a fairly easy 3-9 combo which he misses. Winters has a fairly easy shot on the 3 and misses it leaving Richeson a nice table to run. Richeson runs up to the 6 and leaves himself perfect on the 7 ball, almost straight in he shoots and bobbles hte 7 ball in the pocket leaving Winters the 7 and 9 to shoot for the game.
Game 8 - Winters breaks and runs making the score 5-3 WInters.
Game 10 - Richeson breaks and pockets the 4 ball but has no shot so elects to push out. Winters attempts to bank the 1 ball into the 9 ball and misses resulting in Richeson runing the table making the score 5 - 5.
Game 11 - Richeson breaks and pockets the 1 and 4 balls but has no shot so elects to push out. Winters attempts a safe and misses slightly leaving a piece of the 2 ball showing. RIcheson plays safe leaving Winters a possible rail first hit. Winters hits the 2 ball missing pocketing it but sends it cross table where it caroms off the 8 ball and into the pocket allowing him to run the table. Score is now 6-5 Winters.
Game 12 - Winters breaks and scratches in the side pocket. Richeson takes full advantage and runs the rack making the score 6 - 6.
Game 13 - Richeson breaks dry. Winters plays a perfect safe leaving the cue ball behind the 3 ball sending the 1 ball down table to line up perfectly on the 9 ball making the 1-9 combo dead in the corner pocket. Richeson has no way to get a hit or to push the 1 ball away from the 9 ball. Richeson attempts a masse' kick but isnt close and concedes the game to Winters making the score 7-6 Winters.
Game 14 - Winters scratches in the corner on the break and Richeson runs out making the score 7-7 Richeson.
Game 15 - Richeson makes the 9 ball on the break making the score 8-7 Richeson.
Game 16 - With Richeson on the hill, he apporaches the table with renewed energy and enthusiasm. He breaks dry leaving Winters a look at the 1 ball. Winters attempts a safe on the 1 ball but misses it by just enough to allow Richeson to pocket the ball and run out to win the set and the title. The final score of set 2 was 9 - 7 Richeson!
What an great event we had for this being our first event. We had some truly exciting matches and had a crowd of approximately 80 people wathcing the mini tournament on Friday and over 40 people watching the final 4 play off!
I look forward to the next event and hopefully I'll be rested up by then! ![]()
Special thanks to Doug Emery and Tim Rogers for volunteering their time to this event to referee. Also thanks to Steve Elzinga who volunteered his time to video and take pictures throughout the event. Pictures and video will be posted soon so keep checking back. Last but not least, thanks to my daughter Amanda who runs a mean tournament board!!
We'll see you folks next month in Holland where we will have another action packed event!! Dont miss it! Jason Kirkwood and Richie Richeson are taking on the challenge tables so be sure to come play them a race to 2!! The cost is $10 per race to 2 and if you win you get a shirt saying you kicked their butt.............they also autograph it for you!! You'll rarely get a chance to play people of this skill level unless you are at our events so take advantage of it and bring your "A" game!!
